Nato forces are trying to kill Colonel Gaddafi, the top U.S. commander in the Libyan conflict has admitted.

Such a goal would not be authorised by the UN mandate for the attacks.

Admiral Locklear is the most senior figure to claim Gaddafi is a target.

Critics said the admission was further evidence of ‘mission creep’ and that Nato was breaking the rules of engagement.

Yesterday marked the 100th day since military action against the Libyan regime began. Eighteen nations including Britain, France and the U.S. have launched hundreds of air strikes in Libya to help rebels to overthrow Gaddafi.

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - June 17, 2011: NATO planes resumed bombardments of Tripoli after Muammar Gaddafi's son said the Libyan leader was willing to hold elections and step aside if he lost, an offer rejected by rebels and the United States.
Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam told an Italian newspaper that the elections could be held within three months and transparency could be guaranteed through international observers.

He said his father would be ready to cede power if he lost the election, though he would not go into exile.

But Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmoudi appeared to throw the potential concession into question, saying on Thursday that the leader of the revolution was not concerned by "any referendum."

A visiting Russian envoy said the Libyan leadership had reiterated that Gaddafi's departure was a "red line."

Abdelati al-Obeidi, the Libyan deputy foreign minister, who has been leading the government's diplomacy after Musa Kousa, the foreign minister, defected, gave hints on Saturday to Al Jazeera's James Bays about the secret talks to end the war.

The Al Jazeera correspondent, who spoke to al-Obeidi on a flight to the southern Tunisian town of Djerba, said the Libyan official was quite guarded in his approach and said that "he really was not authorised to tell me what had taken place at this meeting."

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - May 21, 2011: NATO's bombing campaign in Libya has crippled the government's ability to attack rebels fighting to topple Muammar Gaddafi and effectively forced the leader into hiding, the alliance said on Friday.

NATO took command of a U.N.-authorized mission nearly two months ago to stop Gaddafi's forces attacking civilians, and Western governments including the United States, Britain and France are under pressure to show results.

Ambassadors of the 28 NATO states who met this week are confident the mission is making "steady and tangible progress," said NATO spokeswoman Carmen Romero, adding that the campaign had relieved pressure on rebel-held towns.

"NATO nations and partners agree we have taken the initiative. We have the momentum," she told a briefing in Brussels.

"Our mission remains unchanged -- we will prevent attacks and threats against civilians until the threat is removed. The evidence shows we are doing just that," she said, adding that NATO had helped relieve the siege on the port city of Misrata.

Three months into an uprising against Gaddafi's four-decade rule, rebels control the east and pockets in the west including Misrata. The conflict has reached a stalemate as rebel attempts to advance on Tripoli have stalled.

Tripoli calls the rebels criminals and al Qaeda militants and says NATO's bombing is armed aggression by Western nations bent on grabbing Libya's oil.
