DTN News - EGYPT NEWS: Mubarak Faces Death If Convicted In Protester Shootings....NSI News Source Info # 1888

(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 30, 2011:

Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak will be sentenced to death if the courts find him responsible for the death of hundreds of pro-democracy protesters, the country's new justice minister said on Saturday.

Mohammed el-Guindi told the Al-Ahram newspaper that Mubarak, his wife and two sons are facing allegations of corruption stemming from 30 years in power.

Mubarak, 82, stepped down from office in February following an 18-day protest centralized on Cairo's Tahrir Square. At least 846 protesters were killed during the uprising.

Mubarak was later placed under arrest, after spending time in a hospital suffering from heart problems, and accused of ordering the use of deadly force.

El-Guindi said that Mubarak will be tried for the protesters' deaths, adding that former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly could testify that Mubarak had ordered him to open fire on the protesters.

DTN News - EGYPT NEWS: Egypt Detains Mubarak, Sons For Questioning....NSI News Source Info # 1818
(NSI News Source Info) TORONTO, Canada - April 13, 2011:

Egyptian authorities have detained former president Hosni Mubarak for 15 days as part of a corruption investigation.

Prosecutors made the announcement Wednesday shortly after Mubarak was hospitalized with heart problems while being questioned by authorities in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Egyptian media reported that his sons Alaa and Gamal were also being questioned and detained for 15 days.

The Mubaraks, along with several top officials are accused of embezzling public funds and abuse of power for using force against protesters during anti-government demonstrations earlier this year. The ousted president has said the allegations against him are unfounded, and that he has the right to defend his reputation and that of his family.

His remarks were broadcast Sunday by the Al-Arabiya news channel. They were his first public comments since mass protests forced his departure in February. Egyptian military police forcibly removed protesters from Cairo's Tahrir Square Tuesday, ending a four-day sit-in. Security forces detained many demonstrators as they fled the area.

Protesters have stepped up pressure on Egypt's ruling military to try Mubarak and members of his government for corruption and other crimes.
