Brandon Christopher Menard, 26, is facing three consecutive no-parole life prison terms -- plus 25 years to life in prison -- when he appears before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen.
Menard pleaded guilty May 12 to first-degree murder for the Aug. 4, 2006, slayings of his father, David, a 57-year-old real estate agent; his 55-year-old mother, Toni, who worked as a nurse, and his sister, Ashley.
Menard also admitted the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with an allegation that he personally used a gun in the commission of the attack against his father.
David Menard was stabbed 17 times with a 13 1/2-inch knife and shot once in the jaw, while his wife was stabbed four times, according to Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman. The couple were found inside the front door of their home in the 17000 block of Stare Street.
The couple's daughter was stabbed eight times. Her body was discovered in the backyard, and she had a cordless phone in her hand that she had used to call 911, the prosecutor said.
Menard, who was 21 at the time, later called 911 to report that he found his parents' bodies.
He was arrested later that day after being questioned by detectives and has remained jailed since then without bail.
Menard could have faced a
possible death sentence if the case had gone to trial.A motive for the killings remains unknown.
"There was no indication that there was anything about the relationship ... that would explain why this defendant chose to annihilate his family," Silverman said. "Their entire lives revolved around their children."
