Up to two lanes in each direction of the 5 Freeway may be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day, starting Sunday night and ending Friday morning.
The project affects the 5 between the "170 split'' at the Hollywood (170) Freeway junction, and the interchange with the Reagan (118) Freeway. Ramps at Van Nuys Boulevard, Paxton Street and Branford Street will be closed during the overnight hours.
Other ramps, at Sheldon Street, Osborne Street and Van Nuys Boulevard, are closed to traffic at all times through next January.
The $140 million project includes widening existing freeway lanes and overpasses and building newly-configured ramps.
Carpool lanes are also being added across the San Fernando Valley.
Other projects are also underway further north and south of this particular closure zone, as Interstate 5 is being rebuilt between Glendale and Newhall Pass.
The freeway was originally built as U.S. 99 in the mid-1950s.
